Big SUSE Event Bus (for SUSE services integration)

a project by mdinca

Within SUSE we are using various systems for different tasks. E.g. GitHub and GitLab as DVCS, Jenkins for building or testing, OBS for building… and the list continues. Some of those systems can be interconnected in some way. But not every system can do that, especially if you are behind a corporate firewall and some (I'm looking at you GitHub) have a quota. So wouldn't it be nice to have something like a Big SUSE event bus, where every event we'd be interested in could be queried or subscribed to? But before conquering the world, we have to start small. Let's start with GitHub! GitHub has a decent API that let's you query their system. The goal looks like this: Allow multiple clients to query information from GitHub without using the quota irresponsibly. It should also be possible to push state changes to subscribers.

Add Xen PVH support to grub2

a project by j_gross

PVH domains are a new guest type supported by Xen being as lightweight as possible (e.g. no emulation of legacy devices via qemu) while taking advantage of the hardware virtualization features of the x86 processor. As there is no BIOS for a PVH domain booting is a little bit different than for pure hardware virtualized guests. To be able to start such a guest a little shim is needed to gather some information about the environment (especially memory layout) before the standard kernel boot path can be entered. By using a boot loader like grub2 this shim can be avoided as the memory information is already known by grub2 and stored into the so called zeropage according to the multiboot protocol.

Introduce Kitchen tests for the Suse Openstack Cloud chef cookbooks

an idea by itxaka

There is a lack of testing for our infrastructure code, in the chef part. While we have openstack tests that indicate that the chef cookbooks did their work (kind of) there is multitude of small details that can get away and not come up in the openstack tests that refer to infrastructure and changing cookbooks can lead to disasters without proper testing. Introducing kitchen into the equation with a mix of docker to test how if cookbooks work and deploy exactly as we expect them to. It will make it easier to make changes to some more complex cookbook and test them in a real deployment, without having to wait for mkcloud to do a full run. It also means that its easier and faster to test them locally as we dont need to wait for a full run of 3-5 nodes to start, install, configure but we have a ready docker image that is used as deployment node.

Y2Storage improve logging

a project by ancorgs

YaST dumps quite information to its own log file (placed at /var/log/YaST2/y2log). That info is very useful to understand and discover what is happening when an issue appears. All YaST modules write into this log file, and the brand new yast2-storage-ng is not an exception. Some improvements are necessary regarding to the logging of this new module: * Libstorage-ng is the C++ library powering the rewrite of the YaST storage stack. For using libstorage-ng from yast2-storage-ng in a more Ruby-like way, we created a wrapper that provides several features like automatic downcasting. But the current downcasting mechanism used by the wrapper causes libstorage-ng to introduce a lot of noise in the YaST logs. It would be nice to reduce that noise.

So I want to invest some time checking if the error is on my side and the code is indeed proposing the best solution and, if that's not the case, improving the decision making of the code.

Enhance Staging Project process: reduce the gap between Letter staging and ADI staging

a project by mlin7442

We have a known defect exists in Staging Project process, according to the staging project design(in-ring/non-ring), the requests of a application stack can be dispatched to letter staging and adi staging both, in case the request staged in adi staging relies the request staged in letter staging which may causes sometimes the request in adi staging will not be checked-in at the same round, this leads that application stack have different version in TW and those package had request left in adi staging may does not work well as version unmatched to other library. We see this issue happened on Qt5 stack; KDE Applications, etc. For example: a Qt5 stack update, libqt5-qtbase will be staged in a letter staging however libqt5-qtwebview will be staged in a adi staging, once libqt5-qtbase be accepted that libqt5-qtwebview won't be accept in the same round due to it can not be built before libqt5-qtbase merged to Factory but after - 2-phase update. Therefore we need a way to handle those cases to reduce the gap between Letter staging and ADI staging. The concept of this idea:

openSUSE Infrastructure "Factory first"-like policy

a project by tampakrap

The SLE15 development model follows the Factory First policy, where all submissions need to go first to openSUSE:Factory and then to SLE15 repos. This way more bugs are fixed, less patches get lost, less backporting is happening etc. Our openSUSE infrastructure is using salt for configuration management. This was working fine, but suddenly we had to split the openSUSE from the SUSE-DMZ services into separate VLANs, thus the salt codebase had to be split as well. The code itself is mostly formulas and quite similar states between the two set of services though. The only real difference was in the pillars, and even there there was a lot of duplication.

We need a feature to send audio emojis to the group and individuals that play on the recipients phones/speakers no matter what. They can be short, they can be looped, same as image emojis they need to catch attention and not allow the user to focus on something else than the chat, e.g. a smart burping to be sent every day after dinner, a looped very funny laughing when somebody announces to have broken the CI system shortly before the release or just some gulping noise which is what you preferably want to do with the :partyparrot:

Add Ceph support for Azure RESTful protocols

an idea by dmdiss

Microsoft Azure offers a bunch of interesting RESTful protocols, providing access to objects (Block Blobs, similar to S3 Objects), disk images (Page Blobs) and file systems (Azure Files). The underlying services seem to map pretty closely to RADOS, RBD and CephFS respectively, so adding support for these protocols to Ceph, despite being a lot of work, should be relatively straightforward. I've already worked on implementing a C client for these protocols via Elasto, so it might be worth reusing the same code in implementing the server functionality atop the public librados / librbd / libcephfs libraries. The other option would be to use civetweb/rgw, which is already embedded within Ceph for S3/SWIFT gateway support.

Adopt mkdocs-pandoc

The target format for Pandoc is not really limited: you can use it to generate HTML, asciidoc, PDF (via LaTeX), EPUB and many others. Now I do not really have a use for mkdocs-pandoc at the moment, so I've been letting its maintenance slip - basically I'm not maintaining it anymore. It is still a useful tool, and I'd be happy to see it dusted off and adopted by someone who uses it actively enough to maintain it. I'll ask around among the various folks who forked it (there are a few), but maybe there's someone at SUSE who'd be interested as well.

I currently use maildirproc for filtering Maildirs downloaded by offlineimap and like its highly flexible approach to filtering a lot (filters Python code). This works very well, except for one problem: after filtering, the next offlineimap run deletes the messages that where previously in Inbox on the mail server and uploads them to the folders they were sorted into. Depending on how many emails one gets, this is a colossal waste of bandwidth. It is technically possible to filter and move on the server side, as proven by imapfilter. I would like to add the same capability to maildirproc by implementing an IMAP client.

The goal is to develop a tool which takes supportconfig as input and produces either a VM or a container image, resembling as closely as possible the system described by the suportconfig (e.g. installed SP, package versions, storage layout, networking layout, ...). Benefit: help with setting up the reproduction environment. On top of that, having a workflow and associated tooling+infrastructure to pass the VM/container through the support chain (backline->L3->product engineering and/or QAM) could avoid duplicated work.

In the BOSH OpenStack CPI team this isn't the exception, so I've been doing it for the past 15 months. I'd like to transfer some of that experience to you fellow SUSE colleague. We can discuss about the pros and cons that this agile methodology has. For example, there are many misconceptions on how to pair, for once, having the right hardware makes a huge difference. During Hack Week 16 you have the chance to test drive a dual-control workstation (see image) which I believe is one of the biggest differentiators to have a good experience when pairing full time.

Rocket.Chat Protocol Plugin for Thunderbird

an idea by mook_work

While SUSE still runs mainly on IRC, we still need to interact with others, some of which occurs on Slack and Rocket.Chat. I'd like to have one chat application with a good overview of all the various channels I'm in, across the different servers. Sadly, Pidgin isn't a choice here because they don't have a built in web browser, which is required for SAML logins with Rocket.Chat.

Matrix.org is a project to create a protocol and server implementation to replace IRC. Unlike closed tools like Slack, or even open Slack clones like Rocket.chat, Matrix is not focused on a web-client only, but on the protocol to cover all types of clients (text, desktop, web), it is federated (no single server), and it covers good IRC integration (the public matrix server is even on Freenode), and it adds features that Slack clones have like persistent history, pictures, etc.

Create a tool to generate vCPU/vNUMA topology for virtual machines

a project by jfehlig

Most large workloads such as SAP HANA require special, highly optimized configuration to run in a virtual machine. Virtual resources such as memory and CPU must be carefully configured to ensure optimum performance of the virtual machine workload. Default VM configuration created by tools such as virt-install are not optimized and often result in poor performance of large workloads due to memory access latencies and incorrect/incomplete information available to the VM's task scheduler. Currently, users deploying large workloads must manually optimize virtual CPU and memory resources, which can be error-prone and if not done properly can actually degrade performance. This project aims to create a tool that can produce suggested vCPU and vNUMA configuration based on a VM configuration template and capabilities of the target virtual machine host. netlink interface for ethtool

There seems to be an overall consensus that the ioctl interface used by ethtool is a poor design as it's inflexible, error prone and notoriously hard to extend. The project started in Hackweek 16 (fall 2017) and has been worked on since, both in Hackweek 17-19 and outside. kCFI is a tool that enables the compilation of commodity Operating Systems with Control-Flow Integrity protection. kCFI first prototype was developed/implemented during a PhD program held in the University of Campinas, in Brazil. As kCFI consists in multiple tools, which include compiler plugins, kernel patches and binary analyzers, its deployment is considerably complex. Once code refactoring is finished, the next step consists in setting up proper repositories for the tool and for each submodule, along with scripts and documentation to enable easy configuration and compilation on new environments.

openQA IDE

a project by coolo

There is a running gag built into openQA called interactive mode. It goes like this: "if you need the interactive mode, it's broken". The reason: the so called interactive mode is a collection of hacks - in theory making it possible to update needles in a running test. But in fact it's a UI desaster that almost never works. So the goal of this hackweek project is to get rid of it - and instead build a real control from the webui into the backend allowing tests to be written on the fly including needle creation/updates. Easy as that.
