Create new mirror-script package

Learn Crystal by porting part of YaST to that language

an invention by ancorgs

For a very long time, I have been planning to play with Crystal as possible substitute/complement for Ruby. With that goal, I have isolated a very small subset of the Ruby project I know the best (yast-storage-ng) and I want to migrate that subset to Crystal to get a general feeling about the language. See the repository with the experiment already in progress. There is no evil plan to migrate YaST to Crystal. This is just done in the Hack Week spirit of "what if". But if more people join maybe we could get this to an state in which some benchmarks can be executed to check what's the real gain in speed and memory consumption using Crystal instead of Ruby (note: speed and memory are not the only goals of the migration).

consolidate mm debugging tools and package them

a project by mhocko

Project Description

Different people use different ad-hoc tools to debug Linux kernel MM (memory management) related issues. I have couple of those myself. They fall into two main categories. One set for proper data collection and the other for some high level analysis. Our customers would benefit from the former and we (L3 labs from the later). Having them in a single package sounds quite reasonable to me.

Add support for RandR 1.4 (additional GPUs) into KDE display configuration

a project by michalsrb

Plan

RandR is X11 extension for configuring monitors and since version 1.4 also secondary GPUs. These secondary GPUs can either provide additional monitors to output to or can render individual applications instead of the main GPU. (Or even both at once.) Once a secondary GPU is configured to do render offloading, applications can be started with DRI_PRIME=<id> environment variable to actually render on it instead of the main one. There are also USB GPUs (dummy framebuffers) that can be hot-plugged.

There is a precise documentation describing every step of its configuration, but SUSE Manager for Retail is still a very complex piece of software and there is a lot of things to be configured configured properly (proxy configuration, Kiwi image building, DNS, DHCP, etc.) in specific order to get it finally working.

Support for WiFi-enabled Canon cameras in gphoto

a project by michal-m

I have a Canon PowerShot S120, which allows for browsing / copying photos over WiFi. There are apps for Android, iOS, and Windows to do that. The protocol uses upnp to discover the camera and the smartphone/computer and them some HTTP-based protocol. I have some code using libupnp for the discovery and a perl script that is capable of transfering one file, but it's far from complete. Plus, I need to refresh my memory, because the last commit is from January :-(. Now, there seems to be some support for such cameras in gphoto already. So the plan is to dive into gphoto and use what I learned about the protocol to fix the gphoto support. If you own some other WiFi-enabled Canon camera supported by the CameraWindow software, let me know.

Write an open source driver for the DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K

a project by patrikjakobsson

Project Description

The DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K is a PCI Express capture card featuring one 6G-SDI and one HDMI 2.0a connection. It can record all formats uncompressed up to 2160p30. The big difference with this card compared to many other capture cards is that it captures all the raw data uncompressed. This allows for it to be used for automatic testing of graphics cards.

Obsolete: Stabilize Janus

an idea by ancorgs

During previous Hackweek, Jangouts (an alternative to Google Hangouts) was developed. Since then, it has served as well in the YaST team. Other teams are also using the internal instance regularly. But it cannot be adopted company-wide due to the instability of the main server component (Janus Gateway) when running on top of SLE12. For details, see this thread on the (internal) Reseach mailing list. I don't have the knowledge to fix the problems, but I'd be 100% available to help anybody trying to hunt the issues down (I'll be in Nuremberg during hackweek). As an alternative, I'm considering a plan B I would hate to do: dockerize Janus with Debian/Ubuntu since that seem to be the environment used by the Janus developers.

Moses machine translation performance tuning

a project by marxin

Moses is a statistical machine translation system that allows you to automatically train translation models for any language pair. Intention of the project is to tune up existing software, where a glimpse shows that majority of time is consumed by memory allocation, dynamic casting and other calculation non-related stuff. I would like to inspect many techniques (like perf profiling, GCC LTO, GCC profile-guided optimization, code refactoring, OpenTuner, etc.) which may bring really significant performance gain. Moreover, it would be really beneficial to come up with a cookbook that can be used by folk in general. If possible, I would like to create a step-by-step performance improvement graphs.

Get to know SMP on x86 systems better

Project Description

In order to learn how operating systems work on a x86 chip, I had written (long ago) a toy OS based on code found on osdev wiki [1]. It allowed me to understand the interaction between the OS and the x86 hardware, and to some extent how the OS handles userspace (I used newlib for some userspace programs). The single-processor OS code later served me well as a base for a course about operating systems I taught at the university.
