Hack the Hack Week tool
an invention by hennevogel
This project is about advancing the tool you're currently browsing. It got started back in Hack Week 9 to retire all the weird tools we've used in the past to track ideas. As you can see it has gone far but is still far from done. There are lots of features missing and bugs to be fixed on github. Get going!
Easy openSUSE Upgrade
a project by maverick74
The idea is about an easy way to allow users to make upgrades (e.g.: changing from one major version like 15.0 to version 15.1) using a GUI and as easy as they can in Ubuntu. Something like a notification with a button to perform the upgrade with just one-click, instead of having to deal with the terminal, that frights some new users and gives them the sensation of an outdated system.
Packman diet 2.0
a project by scarabeus_iv
Continuing last year tweaks of packman project we should proceed in the good work and reduce the packman to provide smallest set of packages possible on Tumbleweed (later on inherited by 43.0...). One of the cool results planned is that on stock openSUSE Tumbleweed user will be able to run most of the multimedia apps and play youtube (this is already working) and also with addition of non-free repository being able to run netflix.

Refresh connect.opensuse.org
a project by lrupp
Connect is the "social network" of the openSUSE community. While this might not sound so important, the problem is that the tool is used for membership management and all the other "administrative" stuff for the openSUSE community, which makes it a very important tool. The bad news is that - since years(!) - there is no-one actively maintaining the application. While the openSUSE Heroes keep the basic infrastructure up and running, they are not responsible for the application itself. Following the standard policy for such services, this would mean that connect has to be shut down immediately. But the openSUSE board heavily depends on this tool and asks every time when it comes to "shut it down" - to not do it.
LetsEncrypt integration for openSUSE
an invention by dmolkentin
Make openSUSE the first distribution to support LetsEncrypt/ACME natively, in order to provide easy TLS encryption for all services. openSUSE users should be able to 1. Request certificates for associated host names and keep them up-to-date.
audio emojis for Rocket.chat
an idea by rsimai
We recently changed from IRC to Rocket.chat and now all enjoy the colorful richness of emojis, and in particular animated emoticons such as the :partyparrot: that so much helps productivity. But there's a latent feeling something still is missing and the answer is simple: audio emojis! We need a feature to send audio emojis to the group and individuals that play on the recipients phones/speakers no matter what. They can be short, they can be looped, same as image emojis they need to catch attention and not allow the user to focus on something else than the chat, e.g. a smart burping to be sent every day after dinner, a looped very funny laughing when somebody announces to have broken the CI system shortly before the release or just some gulping noise which is what you preferably want to do with the :partyparrot:
SUSE Musicians Project
a project by jctmichel
We started the SUSE Musician's Space several Hackweeks ago, out of which we spawned the SUSE band, now known as SUSE LOUD. Since there are a lot of musicians in SUSE, not all rock musicians, we decided to see whether we could get some other music projects off the ground during this Hackweek.
openSUSE Infrastructure "Factory first"-like policy
a project by tampakrap
The SLE15 development model follows the Factory First policy, where all submissions need to go first to openSUSE:Factory and then to SLE15 repos. This way more bugs are fixed, less patches get lost, less backporting is happening etc. Our openSUSE infrastructure is using salt for configuration management. This was working fine, but suddenly we had to split the openSUSE from the SUSE-DMZ services into separate VLANs, thus the salt codebase had to be split as well. The code itself is mostly formulas and quite similar states between the two set of services though. The only real difference was in the pillars, and even there there was a lot of duplication.

Learn to speak, read and write German
an invention by cjschroder2
My German reading and speaking skills suck. I've forgotten everything except "Mehr Bier, bitte". A week of intensive immersion ought to enable me to order food as well. And converse with my German team members. Especially when we go out for meals and drinks. This should have a concrete goal, so I will write a short story in German to demonstrate my amazing new fluency*.

Research on OMEMO for libpurple
a project by whdu
OMEMO is the next generation of end-to-end encryption method for IM applications, which supersedes OTR. Compare to OTR, OMEMO provides many useful new features. Currently, the support for libpurple is still in development. I found two projects - lurch and libpurple-omemo-plugin. They are in early phase so it is probably not very stable and few features are missing.
Pair Programming Test Drive/Probefahrt
a project by mamorales
Are you interested in pairing? Are you wondering whether it is something that would help you and your team members in your current project? Would you like to try it out before you fully commit to such an extreme idea? Then this is your lucky day Sir/Madam! Within the Cloud Foundry project you are expected to pair pretty much every time you are working on something. In the BOSH OpenStack CPI team this isn't the exception, so I've been doing it for the past 15 months. I'd like to transfer some of that experience to you fellow SUSE colleague. We can discuss about the pros and cons that this agile methodology has. For example, there are many misconceptions on how to pair, for once, having the right hardware makes a huge difference. During Hack Week 16 you have the chance to test drive a dual-control workstation (see image) which I believe is one of the biggest differentiators to have a good experience when pairing full time.
Improve the openSUSE infrastructure

There is a lot to do in the openSUSE infrastructure land... So let's start, have a look at https://progress.opensuse.org/, take some tickets and try to resolve them as good as possible. There are also other interesting topics:
Intranet Search Engine
a project by sven15
In this hack week we want to focus on improving the existing components used for http://docsearch.nue.suse.com. Creating separated repositories for each service and pushing them to github.com is also desired. We also want to create the theoretical foundation for categorizing text to improve the search results.

New office decoration
a project by mdeniz
As we have grown in our remote and non official office at Gran Canaria we had to rent another space. This new office is almost empty and we need a little bit of love to improve the sensation of relax and commodity while we do what we love most. The main target of this project is to kickstart the decoration process, creating a minimum plan of what we want to achieve and step the first steps
JetPad - Online collaborative text editor
a project by ammartinez
At SUSE/openSUSE we are using (at least some times) Etherpad, whose functionality is really limited and looks as taken from the past. :seenoevil: After taking a look to other possible Open Source alternatives, I think there is at the moment any which offers all the feature I would like to have. Because of that I would like to contribute to JetPad, with the idea of using it privately and that it can also be used by SUSE/openSUSE. JetPad is a web-based collaborative text editor built with SwellRT real-time technology and the Angular 2 framework. Both JetPad and SwellRT code can be found in GitHub:
Securing EMail communication with hardware tokens (e.g. YubiKey)
a project by bigironman
From a user perspective there are many ways to secure email communication with pgp. Especially the key handling is still challenging non tekkis. This project investigates processes techniques that are easier to handle for users by introducing hardware tokens for storing the private key.
status page
an idea by tampakrap
The openSUSE Heroes team provides a status page under https://status.opensuse.org, which is based on Cachet. While it is very nice to provide a status page to the users, this one has a few key issues explained below, * The need of the DB requires syncing between locations. Thus it would have been better to replace it with a static web page (see also at the offsite meeting summary link above, which also includes links of status pages of other infra teams).
Romantic photo competition

Record SUSE's Nürnberg office from above and have fun (with drones)
an idea by kbabioch
Since I'm a little bit of a drone-a-matic myself, and I enjoy flying around with drones, I propose to fly around/above the SUSE building, record some footage, and make a cool promo video out of it. We could potentially use this footage (together with some recordings from inside the building taken by hand) as a promotion for the company and show others (via social media, etc.) how cool of a place SUSE and the Nürnberg office actually is.
