Proof of Concept Support for SUSE Cloud, best practice

a project by rsimai

With many Proof of Concepts (PoCs) going on for SUSE Cloud, the development team has observed that we have no clear path on how Sales Engineers (SEs) and sometimes dedicated support engineers (xSE) can receive technical support to successfully complete the projects, often leading to escalation calls and even firefighting on-site visits by developers. Goal of that project is to come up with a best practice guide and to eventually set expectations on what's possible from a development point of view. Results should be documented in a central internal location and announced to all relevant parties.

crossword puzzle generator

a project by rsimai

Create a console application for a crossword puzzle generator that can be fed with a custom list of word+explanation pairs. It may be used by people to quickly familiarize with a specific topic (e.g. a knowledge area, new hires to the company ...) to at least understand the terminology and the abbreviations that are used. Or to just have some distraction and fun :-) I think it consists of three components:

audio emojis for Rocket.chat

an idea by rsimai

We recently changed from IRC to Rocket.chat and now all enjoy the colorful richness of emojis, and in particular animated emoticons such as the :partyparrot: that so much helps productivity. But there's a latent feeling something still is missing and the answer is simple: audio emojis! We need a feature to send audio emojis to the group and individuals that play on the recipients phones/speakers no matter what. They can be short, they can be looped, same as image emojis they need to catch attention and not allow the user to focus on something else than the chat, e.g. a smart burping to be sent every day after dinner, a looped very funny laughing when somebody announces to have broken the CI system shortly before the release or just some gulping noise which is what you preferably want to do with the :partyparrot:

Investigate and setup internal survey system

a project by rsimai

We often struggle to get feedback from our people, in particular if it's supposed to be anonymous. There are external systems on the Internet which are typically commercial, where (free) usage is limited and situation with GDPR isn't clear. I want us to investigate and find (or found!) an Open Source project that allows to easily collect (internal) surveys.

SUSE incarnation of the Party Parrot

an invention by rsimai

The Parrot seems to have many fans meanwhile, in particular since we're running Rocket.chat at SUSE. Some may find these emoticons distracting, some find it just cool and I would certainly love to see something like the Partyparrot but as a "SUSE parrot", probably someone manages to make the SUSE Geeko move in a similar fashion, as party_geeko. Finally I'd love to see this uploaded to the cultofthepartyparrot.com under "Party Guests". Because clearly the Geeko insists! :-) Bonus: do the same with TUX for total ssǝuızɐɹɔ

Lioncast RGB Keyboard user software, protocol reverse engineering

a project by rsimai

I recently bought a Lioncast LK200 RGB keyboard which is a nice piece of hardware and has exactly the look and feel I want. All basic functions work well under Linux. Unfortunately the manufacturer only provides user software to upload/download profiles and control the LEDs for Windows. The device can be configured and operates autonomously from any OS but color setup is a PITA and it's very easy to factory-reset, and lose all config. I approached them but Lioncast seems neither interested to support native Linux nor to provide protocol specs so one can implement it. I thought to take this as an example to learn about reading and reverse-engineering USB device software.

Jitsi for Hackweek

a project by rsimai

Primarily to support Hackweek, but also to gain experience for a potential future corporate use, I like to run the open source Jitsi in a SUSE context and within a setup that is close to what SUSE IT is doing. The service will be built in AWS/EKS within the SUSE E&I space and should be up and running on day 1, but will need love during the 5 Hackweek days to

Open Sauce is in our Genes

a project by rsimai

We've developed a bit of a habit within the Cloud Solutions leadership team to talk about new culinary endeavors after the weekend, telling the others about what fine dishes were created and sharing photos. We discovered that if we combine them to a menu we'll probably have the best international Dinner in the world but since we're all far away from each other we need to share the recipes to make it work. We're likely not the only ones doing that, so why not start a SUSE cookbook in a open source developer fashion, in a git repository and jointly feed - pardon - fill it with recipes for food the SUSE family likes.

indoor air quality sensor

a project by rsimai

Description

I noticed during home office times as well as with multiple people in one office how quickly air quality drops, which affects concentration and finally performance, as it causes tiredness and headache. I want a device that continuously measures the quality and reminds me in time to make adjustments to the airco (if available) or when to air the room, or take a break outside. Parameters to measure are at least temperature, humidity and CO2 level. The device should be stand-alone and potentially battery powered, with the option to connect to other devices such as PCs or smart phones through Wifi, Bluetooth, Serial, ...

Learn about AI, ML, neural networks and see what's possible with SUSE Linux

a project by rsimai

Everybody is talking about (and with) ChatGPT. I tried it and was impressed by how well the language model behaves and finally how real and humanly it appears, despite the obvious nonsense that it outputs. I was wondering how machine learning practically works and how to build a neural network.

Linux incarnation of the Party Parrot

an invention by rsimai

Project Description

Lesser on the coding side but to follow up on a past fun project: the Party Geeko Party Geeko insists since Hackweek 18 and is in good company with the other party guests.
