investigate how kernel live patching works

a project by herbert0890

kGraft is SUSE Labs answer to the rising need for being able to patch the running kernel without rebooting the system. I think this kind of tool is very cool, so by this hackweek chance, I want to investigate it how it works and how it was implemented. And also by this chance, I hope I can improve my ability of kernel hacking. If you are also interested in kernel live patching, please join this project together.

AppArmor utils: rewrite more rule types into classes

an invention by cboltz

While the python-based AppArmor utils (aa-logprof etc.) are much easier to understand and maintain than the old perl code, there are still some terribly long functions like parseprofiledata() in aa.py that are not too easy to understand. Also, using hasher() (a recursive array) as storage can have some strange side effects. Another problem is that test coverage isn't too good, especially for the bigger functions. I already wrote the CapabilityRule and CapabilityRuleset classes (and also the BaseRule and BaseRuleset classes) some months ago, and changed the code to use those classes. This code is already in upstream bzr.

Improve supplychain security in the build service

an idea by kbabioch

In the past I've worked on a set of scripts to identify potential for improvement of the supply chain within our build service. For now RPM files can be scanned for unused signature files that are available upstream and look for potentially unused https:// links, although they are available. These scripts work on a prototype-basis, but there is a lot of follow-up work to do, e.g.:

tftp boot installer and PXE server container image

an invention by kukuk

We provide tftp server and RPMs containing the installer to run from tftp. Disadvantage is, that the user needs to setup a tftp boot system first. Why not putting everything in a container, so that the admin only need to run the container and can then choose on the to be installed machine, what he wants install? And following this, put the container in a kubernetes cluster like SUSE CaaS Platform.

Fix order of use co-operation between vlc and camsource applications

a project by dmair

Using the camsource and vlc packages as an example. If camsource is configured to use a given dev/video[n] device with a choice of resolution in the width and height fields of a camsource conf file then if camsource is the first application to access the device captured images are as-expected. However, if an application like vlc is used for the same device (and exited) before starting camsource (e.g. to check the view from the camera before starting camsource) and if the camera supports higher resolutions than used in the camsource configuration what occurs is that camsource will not setup the camera to use the configured resolution and has a broken view of the camera output based on the vlc chosen resolution chopped to the camsource configuration. For example, with camsource configuration set to use 640x480 on a camera that supports 720x480 and vlc is used and exited before camsource is started then the captured camsource images contain two non-continuous partial image blocks with a horizontal border dividing them. I assume either vlc fails to fully reset the device configuration when exiting or camsource fails to initialize the device "from scratch" when starting. The two applications use different video device APIs but the setup and cleanup for the camera in each case is a very limited part of the application's functionality.

Lioncast RGB Keyboard user software, protocol reverse engineering

a project by rsimai

I recently bought a Lioncast LK200 RGB keyboard which is a nice piece of hardware and has exactly the look and feel I want. All basic functions work well under Linux. Unfortunately the manufacturer only provides user software to upload/download profiles and control the LEDs for Windows. The device can be configured and operates autonomously from any OS but color setup is a PITA and it's very easy to factory-reset, and lose all config. I approached them but Lioncast seems neither interested to support native Linux nor to provide protocol specs so one can implement it. I thought to take this as an example to learn about reading and reverse-engineering USB device software.

Goodbye Dister

an invention by cschum

SUSE Studio was shut down earlier this year. It has been online for more than ten years and there are tons of links and references out there. To not make them lead into the wasteland of 404 we should have a landing page on https://susestudio.com which leads to what users can use instead of SUSE Studio. I did a mockup of a page which could be hosted there. See it at https://github.com/cornelius/goodbye-dister.

open-iscsi database untanglement

an idea by lee_duncan

The open-iscsi package uses a file/directory-based database -- actually, 3 databases: the "send targets" done with their results, the "nodes" found, and the "interfaces" known/used. But there are inefficiencies when dealing with thousands of targets, and the "node" and "send target" databases could easily be combined. Perhaps moved into a real database? Also, the sysfs interaction that open-iscsi does is terrible with thousands of targets, perhaps even O(n^2), which would really really suck. I'd like to investigate the relationship of sysfs access to number of targets/LUNs to verify this.

Out-of-the-box SPD support

an invention by jdelvare

In order to see the SPD (detailed memory information) data, the user currently has to manually load the needed kernel driver. Which driver to load depends on the memory type. Depending on the driver user, the devices may even have to be instantiated manually and this is a non-trivial multi-step task. Plus you need to be root to do it. I would like to attempt to automatize all this at least in the most common and simple cases like Intel x86 desktop. The idea would be to figure out the memory type and the I2C address of the SPD EEPROMs based on DMI data. If the DMI data is of good quality then it should be possible to automatically figure out which driver to use and to instantiate the devices at boot time.

Setup root-encrypted server to provide password via ssh

an invention by holgisms

You can encrypt your servers root filesystem, but need to provide a password during the boot process in order to "unlock" and start the system. This is easy if you have physical access to the server by entering it via keyboard. But if you do not have physical access it's not that easy. This project is about to set up a server that might be able to have an encryted root filesystem which can be "unlocked" by entering the password via ssh.
