Revive (web)pin for openSUSE

a record by lrupp

Which package currently provides libfoo.so.6 ? A question for/from packagers and currently not easy to answer, even if the Build Service might know about the content of packages inside a repository as he created the nice filelist.gz files inside the repomd directories with all the needed information already.

While in general everything still works, the current (patached/extended) planet installation behind planet.opensuse.org is a bit outdated and not maintained any more. The initial plan is to:

Learn gitbook.com

a record by lrupp

https://www.gitbook.com/ allows you to combine repositories on https://github.com with a simple to use WebUI for writing books. As result, your crazy content in your README.md (or whatever *.md) files will become available for your customers as book in form of a pdf, epub or mobi download. This hackweek project is about to learn new things and try to do something useful by collecting all my former experiences in a book that is on my TODO list since more than 10 years now:

Refresh connect.opensuse.org

a project by lrupp

Connect is the "social network" of the openSUSE community. While this might not sound so important, the problem is that the tool is used for membership management and all the other "administrative" stuff for the openSUSE community, which makes it a very important tool. The bad news is that - since years(!) - there is no-one actively maintaining the application. While the openSUSE Heroes keep the basic infrastructure up and running, they are not responsible for the application itself. Following the standard policy for such services, this would mean that connect has to be shut down immediately. But the openSUSE board heavily depends on this tool and asks every time when it comes to "shut it down" - to not do it.

Improve the openSUSE infrastructure

There is a lot to do in the openSUSE infrastructure land... So let's start, have a look at https://progress.opensuse.org/, take some tickets and try to resolve them as good as possible. There are also other interesting topics:

Evaluate mirrormanager (or mirrormanager2) for download.opensuse.org mirror management

a project by lrupp

As there is no progress around MIrrorPinky since 5 years now, let's say the project is dead and look for something different, which allows Mirror administrators to edit the settings of their own mirrors. The Fedora people developed a WebUI named mirrormanager for their admins - let's see if we can get it somehow connected to our MIrrorBrain database and use this as frontend instead.

Playing with ESP8266

an invention by lrupp

The ESP8266 is a low-cost WI-Fi microchip with full TCP/IP stack and microcontroller capability. I want to explore the features and (in case of success) attach a BME280 to get temperature, humidity and barometric pressure information streamed over WI-Fi. As the price of both components is just around 10 EUR, this would be a nice add-on for my weather station at home...

Improve our 3D printers

a project by lrupp

Currently we have two sponsored 3D printers available in the Nuremberg office. Both are located in a lab - which makes it hard to access them. Both also need some (hardware) maintenance. This (hopefully short) side project should make the printers more usable and accessible for others.

Improve openSUSE infrastructure

a project by lrupp

There is always something to do if you run the infrastructure for such a big project like openSUSE.... Our Admin wiki currently lists over 80 machines - and while we already "salted" some of them, there is always room for improvement and room to learn something new just by making your hands dirty and diving into the administrator role for a machine.
