Salt Inspector: remove SQL database
an idea by bmaryniuk
Description
Salt Inspector, formerly known as "Salt Node" is running an SQLite under the hood in order to buffer query results that usually taking time. After a while using this, the SQLite appears to be a quite overhead for this task as well as asking for an additional maintainable dependency.
Jessy: it is like Alexa, but closer to you
a project by bmaryniuk
Alexa understands you. Jessy is the same, but you also understand her! :-)
Everyone loves to talk to the computer. Especially if it understands you. :-) So the Amazon Alexa is a hype right now. However, it requires your marriage to Amazon and signing contract to sell your soul in the afterlife: Alexa is nothing but a fancy microphone that sends everything you speak to ̶F̶B̶I̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶C̶I̶A̶ Amazon cloud so it will access your public API. Yes, and give them your access rights, of course...
Salt Minion Discovery
a project by bmaryniuk
What if Salt Minions no longer need to specify the IP or DNS address for the Master? Or even better: Master(s) can call minions. Of course, for the beginning, we would assume the network is trusted. But we should be able to add further security checks (keypairs etc). Possible use cases:
Salt Support Tools (try to ditch supportconfig)
a project by bmaryniuk
Currently Salt is using supportconfig
utility alongside with the SUSE Manager installation. Every single bugreport for Salt, that contains its logs are always useless that regard. It might work for SUSE Manager, but for Salt it doesn't. And even after asking user to switch the cluster into a debug mode or even trace mode, it is still far away from being useful enough, so the supporter don't need to dance with the tambourine around the fire, guessing what ghost just munged what component.
What if we can reuse Salt's internal tooling and develop some more tools that will not just grab logs/sysinfo from what is already there, but also get much more data, "x-ray" minions, turn them into a debug mode, collect right data, perform tests realtime etc?
SUSE Manager Cluster Extension (PoC)
a project by bmaryniuk
Since SUSE Manager doesn't scale out and stacking it into another pyramid of susemanagers won't help here, the real architectural changes needs to be done to achieve true scale-out of this product. This hackweek project is about how to Turn SUSE Manager into a cluster. Areas to be tackled:
