I'd like to see a web-based desktop RSS reader with a simple 3-pane interface like SharpReader's SharpReader's but it runs in Firefox and uses Firefox shared storage to store the user's usage data on their local machines, not on a server.

Technology:

  • jstree for the tree widget

  • Web client: React or will vanillaJS/simple JQuery be enough?

  • Server: Rails with devise for authentication management

  • Machine-learning library to build a recommendation system

  • Reads in OPML from file or web source

Concerns:

  • Can we do recommendations (based on anonymous data, no need to explicitly link users together) and remain GDPR-compliant?

  • What about editorial right to exclude feeds -- we don't want to recommend certain feeds due to their content?
