Project Description

I've been using open-source video editing software like Shotcut before and I used to be pretty happy with it. Nowadays, however, I need more sophisticated workflows that allow me to process n-log video, do color grading, synchronize video and audio from multiple sources, have better looking effects, and so on. I've reached the point where Shotcut just can't do what I would like it to.

As it happens, DaVinci Resolve is one of most powerful video editing tools in the world, and even though it's not open-source there is a free edition available for Linux. It's going to be more complicated than Shotcut, for sure, but I reckon that learning to use this tool is worth it. I guess I could take my video editing to another level. If nothing else, I should get the job done quicker with professional tools.

Goal for this Hackweek

I'll shoot some fancy non-nonsensical video footage and then I'll edit that into a video clip with DaVinci Resolve, using as many crazy features as I possibly can. I'll have exploding sub-titles, lots of cuts in sync with some techno beat, footage from multiple cameras, split screens, extremely moody colors ... you name it.

DaVinci Resolve does have multi-user collaboration, so I guess I could even put something together with other people if someone happens to have an interest. I might also live-stream some of my experiments on Twitch and use that footage to create a short report and/or tutorial about my efforts.

Resources

DaVinci Resolve, AMD Graphics Card, lots of memory, lots of CPUs, lots of disk space.
