Project Description

The SUSE Enterprise Storage team has embarked on a new open source project: Aquarium.

Aquarium is our take on an opinionated storage appliance. It is designed to take the fundamentals of Ceph, hide everything that makes it complicated to use, and develop an easy to use, rock solid storage appliance. The project started development in January, and has become a passion project for the team. The project is split into two clearly defined work streams: Gravel (backend) and Glass (frontend).

Currently, we see Ceph as being too complex to use for the average user. This complexity stems from Ceph's flexibility that supports a huge matrix of use cases and the effects this has on available capacity, performance and thus availability.

All current management tooling deploys Ceph bottom-up, i.e. the user must specify deployment patterns at the daemon level, create pools and crushmaps (which encode various availability and performance requirements) and only then can a user deploy their workload.

We are exploring if other user interface abstractions are practical and ultimately an improvement. The goal should be simplification where a user is not required to configure individual daemons or disk layouts, but can provide a high level specification of what they want (in terms of availability, usable capacity, ...?) and a piece of code translates that to a deployment layout. Whether this deployment layout can be set up on the current hardware can be determined by software and the user can be provided with the feedback (be it positive or negative).

Who can be involved?

Literally, anyone. We're looking for people who are interested in hacking on new projects, or want to learn something new. We're also more than happy to teach you about storage if you come from a different knowledge background.

If you consider yourself to be non-technical, but interested in how communities work - we're also looking for people to get involved with the other sides of community management that are not related to code only.

Goal for this Hackweek

We are currently in Phase 2 (Milestone 2) of the project where we are actively developing how to deploy a multi-node setup. Our goals:

  • Testing deployment
  • Bug finding/squashing
  • And if you like the project, active development! We have a series of issues related to multi-node deployment, and anything you can grab is yours.

    The GNOME user documentation infrastructure has been recently upgraded with a new site running at help.gnome.org. This is an ongoing project with a number of outstanding major issues to be resolved. When these issues are addressed, it will benefit both the upstream community and downstream projects and products consuming the GNOME user docs, including openSUSE.

    Goals

    Address primarily infrastructure-related issues filed for https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Websites/help.gnome.org/, https://github.com/projectmallard and https://github.com/itstool/itstool projects. Work on contributor guides ported from https://wiki.gnome.org/DocumentationProject.html.

    Testing and adding GNU/Linux distributions on Uyuni by juliogonzalezgil

    Uyuni is a configuration and infrastructure management tool that saves you time and headaches when you have to manage and update tens, hundreds or even thousands of machines. It also manages configuration, can run audits, build image containers, monitor and much more!

    Currently there are a few distributions that are completely untested on Uyuni or SUSE Manager (AFAIK) or just not tested since a long time, and could be interesting knowing how hard would be working with them and, if possible, fix whatever is broken.

    For newcomers, the easiest distributions are those based on DEB or RPM packages. Distributions with other package formats are doable, but will require adapting the Python and Java code to be able to sync and analyze such packages (and if salt does not support those packages, it will need changes as well). So if you want a distribution with other packages, make sure you are comfortable handling such changes.

    No developer experience? No worries! We had non-developers contributors in the past, and we are ready to help as long as you are willing to learn. If you don't want to code at all, you can also help us preparing the documentation after someone else has the initial code ready, or you could also help with testing :-)

    The idea is testing Salt and Salt-ssh clients, but NOT traditional clients, which are deprecated.

    To consider that a distribution has basic support, we should cover at least (points 3-6 are to be tested for both salt minions and salt ssh minions):

    1. Reposync (this will require using spacewalk-common-channels and adding channels to the .ini file)
    2. Onboarding (salt minion from UI, salt minion from bootstrap scritp, and salt-ssh minion) (this will probably require adding OS to the bootstrap repository creator)
    3. Package management (install, remove, update...)
    4. Patching
    5. Applying any basic salt state (including a formula)
    6. Salt remote commands
    7. Bonus point: Java part for product identification, and monitoring enablement

    Advent of Code: The Diaries by amanzini

    Description

    It was the Night Before Compile Time ...

    Hackweek 25 (December 1-5) perfectly coincides with the first five days of Advent of Code 2025. This project will leverage this overlap to participate in the event in real-time.

    To add a layer of challenge and exploration (in the true spirit of Hackweek), the puzzles will be solved using a non-mainstream, modern language like Ruby, D, Crystal, Gleam or Zig.

    The primary project intent is not just simply to solve the puzzles, but to exercise result sharing and documentation. I'd create a public-facing repository documenting the process. This involves treating each day's puzzle as a mini-project: solving it, then documenting the solution with detailed write-ups, analysis of the language's performance and ergonomics, and visualizations.

    Is SUSE Trending? Popularity and Developer Sentiment Insight Using Native AI Capabilities by terezacerna

    Description

    This project aims to explore the popularity and developer sentiment around SUSE and its technologies compared to Red Hat and their technologies. Using publicly available data sources, I will analyze search trends, developer preferences, repository activity, and media presence. The final outcome will be an interactive Power BI dashboard that provides insights into how SUSE is perceived and discussed across the web and among developers.

    Goals

    1. Assess the popularity of SUSE products and brand compared to Red Hat using Google Trends.
    2. Analyze developer satisfaction and usage trends from the Stack Overflow Developer Survey.
    3. Use the GitHub API to compare SUSE and Red Hat repositories in terms of stars, forks, contributors, and issue activity.
    4. Perform sentiment analysis on GitHub issue comments to measure community tone and engagement using built-in Copilot capabilities.
    5. Perform sentiment analysis on Reddit comments related to SUSE technologies using built-in Copilot capabilities.
    6. Use Gnews.io to track and compare the volume of news articles mentioning SUSE and Red Hat technologies.
    7. Test the integration of Copilot (AI) within Power BI for enhanced data analysis and visualization.
    8. Deliver a comprehensive Power BI report summarizing findings and insights.

    You may be suffering from VOMIT (Verbose Output Mental Irritation Toxicity).

    This dangerous, work-induced ailment is triggered by exposure to an overwhelming quantity of log data, especially from parallel systems. The human brain, not designed to mentally process 12 simultaneous autoinst-log.txt files, enters a state of toxic shock.     • add support for more type of logs
    • extend the configuration file syntax beyond the actual one
    • work on log parsing performance

    Find some beta-tester and collect feedback and ideas about features

    If time allow for it evaluate other UI frameworks and solutions (something more simple to distribute and run, maybe more low level to gain in performance).
