Description
As a proud SUSE Engineer, I consider openSUSE is the best open-source distro out there just like all of us.
I use Arch btw.
Why? Not because I consider Archlinux is better; in fact I was one of the victim who got their /usr/bin blown up by the update back in 2013. But Archlinux have captured a hostage and utilized it to force me to be together with it. The hostage is called AUR.
I'm so used to reaching for AUR whenever I need some package, and whenever I need to install a package that's not in the official repo, it feels tedious.
And now I decide that I need to do something for it. Entering OUR.
Goals
The goal is to create something that like AUR. Specifically, we would like to create
A centralized repository that contains build recipes for user-submitted packages, along with a mechanic to rate and comment on the package.
A command line tool that grab recipes from the repository, then build & install the package locally. (Yes, we will also be building it locally!)
What's wrong with OBS?
Nothing is wrong with OBS. OBS is a wonderful platform that enable everyone to create packages and make them possible of getting into the official repo. But:
We would like to create a centralized repository for user submitted packages, so you can just grab the package instead of figuring out which package to install from 100 different home projects. The quality is ensured not by creating a branch project and package a better version, rather you will either make a comment and have the maintainer fix it, or step up as the maintainer yourself.
The fact that packages are built locally make it more transparent to the user, and also saves our server resource.
Therefore, this project does not intend to compete with OBS, rather it is intended to be a complement to OBS.
