This initiative combines SUSE Hack Week’s "Maker" spirit with our SUSE Cares social responsibility values.

The Mission:

To support the For Our Children Foundation by creating handmade lamps in a "Let There Be Light" workshop —challenging us to step away from screens, build with our hands, and raise funds to give vulnerable children a strong start in life.

The Concept: "Let There Be Light" We will host a hands-on workshop in SUSE Bulgaria office in Sofia, led by artist Nikolay Tabakov, where employees build their own lamps. This fits the Hack Week philosophy perfectly by:

  • Hacking Hardware: Engaging in "Maker culture" by building physical structures.

  • Wellbeing: Promoting mental health through creative, off-screen collaboration.

  • Social Impact: Improving the quality of life for at-risk children.

The Build: Participants will learn the technique of wire modeling and Nepalese paper application to engineer a custom lamp from scratch.

The Impact: For every participant, SUSE will donate $50 to the For Our Children Foundation, helping give vulnerable children in Bulgaria a strong start in life.

The Vibe: Collaborative, creative, and strictly analog.

Output: Create unique, handmade lamps

Goal: Raise $1000 for the For Our Children Foundation Christmas Campaign via SUSE’s donation match.

Collaboration & Requirements:

No coding skills required. We are looking for:

  • Makers & Tinkerers: Anyone interested to master basic wire-bending and structural design techniques

  • Creatives: People willing to get their hands dirty (literally—there is glue involved).

  • Community Champions: Colleagues who want to turn their Hack Week time into social good.

  • Note: Participation requires physical presence in the Sofia office on Dec 5th.

Status: Complete This was a fantastic and fun experience for everyone involved! We had 22 participants from the SUSE Sofia office come together to craft their own lamps. The team had a great time bonding, and we successfully reached our maximum fundraising goal of $1,000 for the children's foundation.
