Description

The core of the system is the Home Assistant Green Hub, which will serve as the dedicated, localized controller for all smart devices. The primary goal is to establish a secure, private, and highly customizable local home automation ecosystem, moving away from cloud-dependent solutions.

The immediate next steps involve the initial boot-up and configuration of the Home Assistant OS on the Green Hub, and pairing the first Zigbee devices, connecting all of the smart devices laying around the house and setting the first automations

Goals

Initial Setup and Configuration: By the end of this Hack Week, the Home Assistant Green Hub must be fully set up, connected to the network, and the basic configuration (user accounts, backups) completed.

Zigbee Network Establishment: I aim to have the ZBT-1 USB stick successfully recognized and configured as the Zigbee Coordinator within Home Assistant, and the first two Zigbee devices (Motion Sensor and one Smart Switch) paired and fully functional.

First Automation: Create and test a simple, foundational automation, such as using the Motion Sensor to control the state of one of the Smart Switches (e.g., turning on a light when motion is detected).

Resources

I have acquired the following hardware:

Controller: Home Assistant Green Hub (main brain) and a ZBT-1 Zigbee USB stick for expanding the Zigbee network capacity.

Input/Sensors: A Zigbee Motion Sensor and NFC Tags for triggering automations.

Actuators/Switches: Two AVATTO Smart Wall Switches and a Sonoff device for controlling lighting and possibly other mains-powered appliances.

Documentation: I am utilizing the official Home Assistant documentation and manufacturer datasheets for the Zigbee devices. I plan to document the final configuration in a private Git repository for future reference.

Some images of the first day (1st Dec was a national holiday in my country):

      • All the hardware bought (missing IKEA bulbs on the photo)
      • hooking up Home Assistant Green and the Zigbee Dongle + initial setup of the OS
      • setting up a wall switch
      • proven that switch works "analogically" (PS: it also works via HA add-emoji )

Next steps: Connect my existing home devices and start connecting the remaining sensors and devices bought. Learn how to configure these devices in HA and generally understand how HA works

      Day 2

      https://imgur.com/a/8NaWtgA

      • installed motion sensor
      • installed door sensor
      • paired some other devices with HA (Google Home Mini was a bit of a struggle to get to work as intended)

Day 3 will be working on pairing more devices and creating a proper dashboard

      Day 3 and 4

      https://imgur.com/a/f47sErw

      • Added almost all the devices I could add like TV's, refrigerator, Dish Washer, Clothes Washer, Spotify (some integration are either very exotic or just non-existant)
      • Added Alarmo integration to work as an alarm in combination with door sensor
      • created some "useful" automations (and a fun one too)

      Automations

      • Motion activated night light for the kid
      • NFC tag to arm/disarm alarm
      • Changes the "mood" of the living room when it's 10min for Sporting CP game (connected via google calendar)
      • Demo voice control with Google Home Mini
