Project Description

While I run I always like exploring the world, looking for new path to walk. But of course our resources to do that are limited. So I thought that would be nice to recreate legendary places like Tolkien's maps in 3D and be free to walk around

But we don't want to put every tree, every blade of grass,we are engineeres and we like to automatize things, therefore the idea is create a black box where we provide a map and it gives me an 3D experience of being there.

Goal for this Hackweek

  • We want to explore what languages and/or open source/free applications exists that allow this
  • We want to explore algorithms that allow to create huge worlds without having expense hardware.
  • We want to recreate the Tolkien's middle earth world (without building, this could be for the next one)

First attempt: with threejs the rate of reder with a map of 500x500 vertex without trees moves at 16 fps.. too slow. Alternatives: create low resolution maps and use a lot of fog. Or use other alternatives like unity3D
