The next release of Ceph (Octopus) will be delivered via containers.

A new tool named cephadm is being developed to bootstrap and manage Ceph containers.

Using a set of Raspberry Pis, we will create a small Ceph cluster running in containers built from upstream Ceph development.

Hardware:

  • 3 x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B

  • 3 x 64 GB class 10 SD cards

  • 6 x 4 GB USB sticks

  • 3 x 10/100 Ethernet

Project:

  1. Modify the OBS build to provide an ARM (aarch64) container image published on the openSUSE Container Registry

  2. Install Tumbleweed JeOS with podman

  3. Pull the OBS container build of upstream Ceph and install the SUSE RPM build of cephadm

  4. Configure a mini 3-node CephFS replicated pool using cephadm

  5. Document the procedure

  6. Benchmark and failure testing
