SUSE @home Hands On Lab

a project by johnmpugh

Project Description

In the past year we've found ourselves in the middle of a pandemic, we merged two awesome companies together, and we have completely changed the trajectory of SUSE and Rancher. This project is intended to transfer knowledge of SUSE to Rancher and Rancher to SUSE for those who may be challenged with time and resources to try new things. This gives us a chance to explore other uses for Kubernetes all while taking advantage of older equipment (for use as workers) we may have to spare.

I'm pleased to share that the code quality has improved dramatically since the last hack week and there are now extensive test cases for both unit testing and testing against real vmcores, and we'll use both mypy and pylint (if installed) to perform static analysis. Packages for those are available in openSUSE or as part of the crash-python OBS repo for SLE15. It has been tested with kernels from 3.0 to 5.1.

Bridle - Terraform remote backend in Kubernetes

a project by nroberts

Project Description

Terraform's remote backend requires a Terraform Cloud account and has an initial limited offering. While the initial offering is suitable for small resource management and teams this quickly becomes an issue as usage demands increase. In addition Terraform's remote operations (plan, apply, etc) are executed on HashiCorp's cloud resources which present issues for sensitive data such as passwords and access keys. Users are also constrained to as what tooling is available on the remote execution environment for example having kubectl as part of a local-resource. This project aims to address these shortcomings in a native Kubernetes implementation.

Jangouts development workshop

a project by ancorgs

We are right now testing a patch to Janus that will hopefully give us the stability we were missing in http://jangouts.suse.de. As a consequence, it's reasonable to expect a wider usage of Jangouts inside the company. Thus, I want to share maintainership of Jangouts as much as possible. The more developers know how to fix errors and implement features, the better. We already have a roadmap for the next two versions (0.4.0 and 0.5.0) but I don't want to spend my whole hackweek implementing those features in isolation. I would rather follow a workshop approach to welcome new contributors within the company (or outside, of course), so we get the stuff done and fix the single point of failure for the same price.

Open Sauce is in our Genes

a project by rsimai

We've developed a bit of a habit within the Cloud Solutions leadership team to talk about new culinary endeavors after the weekend, telling the others about what fine dishes were created and sharing photos. We discovered that if we combine them to a menu we'll probably have the best international Dinner in the world but since we're all far away from each other we need to share the recipes to make it work. We're likely not the only ones doing that, so why not start a SUSE cookbook in a open source developer fashion, in a git repository and jointly feed - pardon - fill it with recipes for food the SUSE family likes.

Brainstorming about Continuous Delivery in SLE

a project by pgeorgiadis

Hackweek is here! I think this is the best week of the year to sit down altogether and exchange ideas and suggestions. The main topic is Automation. The goal is that many of these ideas might help various teams within SUSE to engage their business reasons better in defining key expectations and improve the quality of our software products. No fear of change -- the aim is to propose a modern pipeline in a less-invasive manner. Everybody has an idea, everybody has a voice! Brainstorming together can be useful to many different roles, including testers, analysts and developers. Let's have a chit-chat and write down some of those; Hopefully we will come up with plenty of tips on how to organise testing activities better. > Coming together is a beginning. Orca: hunting cephalopods for fun and dinner

a project by LarsMB

Orcas are amazing animals. They are playful, intelligent, great swimmers, and very social. They also love to play with their food, hunting down their prey with advanced strategies - understanding where its prey hides, how it will try to escape, and how to overcome those tactics - and having a lot of fun doing so, before relentlessly tearing it apart, killing it, and eat it. Not necessarily in that order. Oh, and they have the right color scheme. This forces their prey to also improve and adapt more advanced strategies and tactics. In this arms race, both sides evolve and improve: the evolutionary pressure has made cephalopods highly intelligent, adaptable, and resilient. Unfortunately (for them), they are still very tasty. So we should exert more evolutionary pressure on individuals to help them stay alive as a species.

Those working remotely or managing a distributed team know it: face time is invaluable. The former openSUSE team has been using http://sqwiggle.com to keep in touch and Google hangout to hold a stand up meeting every morning. We like the Sqwiggle approach. Although the last updates have made it worse, the concept of having a peep to your colleagues' desks to know if they are there (even if they are working hard or just talking to someone) and the possibility of starting a video conversation just clicking on the face shot can do a lot in reducing distances (and in killing the temptation of working naked for home-officers).

a project by cschum

During Hack Week 7 I worked on an archive of Qt-based libraries. The goal was to easily make all available Qt libraries accessible to developers. Think CPAN for Qt. So I hacked on a web site and a command line client. There was a little bit of progress on the project since then, but with the upcoming KDE Frameworks 5 there will be quite a number of additional libraries available for Qt developers. This should be well represented in Inqlude as well. The coverage of Inqlude is also still not complete, and the tooling needs some improvement as well, especially regarding integration with distributions.

Add branding to DAPS and the suse-xsl-stylesheets

a project by fsundermeyer

DAPS is the tool used by the SUSE documentation team to generate HTML, ePUB, PDF, ... output of the SUSE manuals from DocBook XML sources. It uses the suse-xsl-stylesheets for this purpose. Currently three different suse-xsl-stylesheet brands exist: SUSE, DAPS, openSUSE. Branding is done by adjusting the xsl-stylesheets directly. It would be desirable to be able to easily change the branding, e.g. via a simple config file in the style of /etc/sysconfig files, since most people cannot hack XSLT. This is also the number one enhancement request we get from DAPS users outside of SUSE.

Big SUSE Event Bus (for SUSE services integration)

a project by mdinca

Within SUSE we are using various systems for different tasks. E.g. GitHub and GitLab as DVCS, Jenkins for building or testing, OBS for building… and the list continues. Some of those systems can be interconnected in some way. But not every system can do that, especially if you are behind a corporate firewall and some (I'm looking at you GitHub) have a quota. So wouldn't it be nice to have something like a Big SUSE event bus, where every event we'd be interested in could be queried or subscribed to? But before conquering the world, we have to start small. Let's start with GitHub! GitHub has a decent API that let's you query their system. The goal looks like this: Allow multiple clients to query information from GitHub without using the quota irresponsibly. It should also be possible to push state changes to subscribers.

Experiment with uselessd as a systemd replacement on openSUSE 13.1

an invention by dsterba

The base version for uselessd is systemd-208, which is the version used in 13.1. Let's try if a direct substitution of the binaries works and watch out for the problems. Expected result of the project is to have a working package with "Conflicts: systemd" and "Provides: systemd". The goal is not to fix all problems, a stripped down system with uselessd is considered a good achievement. Anything more complicated could build on top of this.

Currently, the usual way to communicate with VM instances in the cloud from outside is ssh. This is okay for most uses, but a) does not work when you mess up with the guest's ability to network and b) requires a free floating IP. I wonder if, for qemu/kvm instances, it would be possible to use virtio-serial possibilities : from the guest, it is seen as a serial port, and from the outside, it is seen as a UNIX socket, or as something else. It is fast, as it does not go through virtualization and device drivers.

Learn Crystal by porting part of YaST to that language

For a very long time, I have been planning to play with Crystal as possible substitute/complement for Ruby. With that goal, I have isolated a very small subset of the Ruby project I know the best (yast-storage-ng) and I want to migrate that subset to Crystal to get a general feeling about the language. See the repository with the experiment already in progress. There is no evil plan to migrate YaST to Crystal. This is just done in the Hack Week spirit of "what if". But if more people join maybe we could get this to an state in which some benchmarks can be executed to check what's the real gain in speed and memory consumption using Crystal instead of Ruby (note: speed and memory are not the only goals of the migration).

Clustered Samba with Ceph omap as a replacement for CTDB key-value storage

a project by dmdiss

Ceph offers a highly scalable and fault-tolerant storage system. Samba is already capable of sharing data located on the Ceph Filesystem, however scale-out sharing (the same data exposed by multiple Samba nodes) currently requires the use of CTDB for consistent and coherent state across Samba cluster nodes. In such a setup CTDB provides a clustered database with persistent key-value data storage and locking. Database usage is abstracted out via a generic dbwrap interface. Ceph's librados library provides an API for the storage and retrieval of arbitrary key-value data via the omap functions. A watch/notify protocol is also provided as a mechanism for synchronising client state (locking). Key-value data stored in the RADOS back-end inherits the same redundancy features as regular objects, making it a potentially good candidate as a replacement for CTDB in scale-out Samba clusters.

This was necessary to preserve behavior in various edge-case situations, mostly when nil was passed around. The resulting code is often long and hard to work with. Example from SlideShow.rb:

Ceph crushmap visualization

a project by qakapil

The CRUSH algorithm determines how to store and retrieve data by computing data storage locations. CRUSH empowers Ceph clients to communicate with OSDs directly rather than through a centralized server or broker. With an algorithmically determined method of storing and retrieving data, Ceph avoids a single point of failure, a performance bottleneck, and a physical limit to its scalability. CRUSH requires a map of your cluster, and uses the CRUSH map to pseudo-randomly store and retrieve data in OSDs with a uniform distribution of data across the cluster. This project aims at creating graphs of the crush map, for better visualization of the Ceph cluster.

multithreaded network benchmark

an invention by mkubecek

Project Description

There are multiple network benchmark tools already, most popular probably being netperf and iperf. Each of them has its pros and cons but the biggest drawback probably is that netperf runs only one connection (flow) and while iperf can use multiple connections, it still runs in a single thread. For benchmarking of contemporary fast networks like 40Gb/s or 100Gb/s ethernet, this can be a severe limitation as the performance is often CPU bound. Even on 10Gb/s ethernet, we are often unable to saturate the medium if tunneling or complex packet processing is involved.

Automate Haskell Packaging

an invention by psimons

We have various individual tools to automate parts of the Haskell packaging process, like cabal-rpm, but those tools aren't integrated into a fully automated system that keeps Haskell packages up-to-date with as little human intervention as possible. I would like to build that system. Stackage provides us with an accurate list of packages and versions that are known to work together well, and there are basically two flavors: the nightly snapshot (bleeding edge) and the LTS release (stable API). The former is appropriate for Tumbleweed, IMHO, and the latter is appropriate for stable releases like SLE or Leap. Now, we can use cabal-rpm to generate spec files automatically for all packages in a Stackage release and check them into OBS. The process does need some tweaking, however, because cabal-rpm generates spec files that don't always work well for SUSE. We could (a) branch cabal-rpm and add SUSE-specific know-how to remedy that issue or we could (b) maintain a set of patches that adapt the generated spec files to our needs. Once the Stackage releases are available in an OBS development project, we need another automated process that submits all updated packages to openSUSE:Factory, etc.

Local voice recognition for home automation

There are several popular ways of controlling home automation with voice today. Amazon Echo and Google Home both allow users to control lights, speakers, etc. with a simple voice command. For this project, I want to replicate some of the simple voice commands supported by projects like those, but in a way that does all processing from within the local network, and doesn't upload any voice clips to a server outside the home. libvirt TCK

a project by jfehlig

The libvirt TCK provides a framework for performing testing of the integration between libvirt drivers, the underlying virt hypervisor technology, related operating system services and system configuration. The idea (and name) is motivated by the Java TCK. Currently the libvirt TCK is not fully packaged for SUSE and the test suite itself contains a lot of Redhat-isms. Mike Latimer and Jim Fehlig will work on properly packaging libvirt TCK (it has a LOT of perl dependencies) and patching it to work better with SUSE virtualization hosts and SUSE guest operating systems. It has traditionally focused on the KVM hypervisor, so there might be some progress made to make it work better with Xen too.

openSUSE Infrastructure "Factory first"-like policy

a project by tampakrap

The SLE15 development model follows the Factory First policy, where all submissions need to go first to openSUSE:Factory and then to SLE15 repos. This way more bugs are fixed, less patches get lost, less backporting is happening etc. Our openSUSE infrastructure is using salt for configuration management. This was working fine, but suddenly we had to split the openSUSE from the SUSE-DMZ services into separate VLANs, thus the salt codebase had to be split as well. The code itself is mostly formulas and quite similar states between the two set of services though. The only real difference was in the pillars, and even there there was a lot of duplication.

Automated test for game + only web based dev + Python openQA

an invention by okurz

motivation

Test automation can be fun and openQA is good at it but it has limitations. This project is meant to find out where the limits are for applications with lots of things moving on the screen, e.g. a game. Completely unrelated, web based tools become the norm for many users, e.g. when working from a chromebook or similar environments. The idea here is to try to use only web based tools and not force users to use a terminal which can be frightening :) As a third requirement: Some people are not feeling comfortable using openQA "because tests are written in Perl". This is not necessarily true because tests are rather written using a simplistic test API and only a small subset of Perl knowledge is necessary, however, we still want to support other entry points so there is Python support added in https://github.com/os-autoinst/os-autoinst/pull/1558 . To find out what this new way is capable of this project should use only that Python support and find out any restrictions.

A set of utilities to produce a "from scratch" OCI/Docker container using Opensuse/SLE rpms

a project by ldragon

Project Description

I recently used melange and apko to build a from scratch image. The result was a set of auditable and easy to use container and apk repository. The toolkit reduces the work need to make from scratch images with minimal work on the actual docker container(which can be quite painful if you've tried making a from scratch image on your own).

YaST2 code reorganization

a project by ancorgs

YaST code organization is a mess at many levels (files location, namespaces, code dependencies...). Recently we created this gist to put some of the issues on the table Many YaST developers will be at openSUSE Conference, that overlaps with Hackweek. The plan is to lock them all in a room with a blackboard and reach agreements on how the code should be organized in the future. Then use Hackweek to iron the details, document everything in some kind of style guide and, if time permits, even do some experiments about how to adapt the existing code to the new conventions.

Investigate using Terraform plus Salt as HA cluster test platform

a project by KGronlund

For testing Hawk, we're currently using a Vagrant configuration, and for testing HA releases we've been using a set of scripts originally authored by Antoine Ginies as a Hackweek project. My vague idea is to combine Terraform, Salt and a custom web frontend to make a tool that can be used by us as developers but also for others that want to try Hawk or play around with a cluster, for example for the UX team when testing modifications to the Hawk UI. I would base this on the work done by the SUSE Manager team:

For testing some of the upstream Linux drivers we maintain it is necessary to emulate the hardware as we're getting bug reports for the upstream drivers but have no chance to test fixes. Search in internal wiki

Now we are lack of using internal wiki page to solve problem. One of the reason is that we don't know if it contain the solution we need, and it's not convenient to search it manually in wiki page. It's much more slower than using google. In one group, we are most likely facing the same problem during work. So keeping the best solution, which we got from searching engine, in internal wiki is an efficiency way to collect standard workflow.

Copy&Paste from the last comment there: It's true there is a lot of room for improvements to raise the awareness about "lurkers". For example, we could compare the number of people subscribed to your stream and the number of publishers. If numbers do not match, there is somebody listening but not being displayed. That's something we could show in the UI.

SUSE Manager / Salt integration revisited

a project by j_renner

There is a number of possible improvements to the architecture of SUSE Manager / Salt integration that should be investigated in order to improve the reliability and scalability of the backend: 1. Actions are currently scheduled in the minions using the schedule module of Salt. This brings problems with reliability as for instance a minion can be down at the specified schedule time which leads to actions not being executed. Scalability can be an issue as actions being scheduled for many minions might return results to the server at the same time. Instead it might be better to keep control over scheduled actions on the server to allow batching of actions as well as downtimes of minions or even the server. There is a work in progress branch to get started.

Automate fstest runs using SUSE Engineering Cloud

a project by jankara

Currently, each filesystem developer does his fstests runs (a testsuite for regression-testing of filesystems) on his dedicated test machine, on Orthos machine, ... This not only means duplication of efforts to automate this testing but also leads to inefficient use of resources (sometimes the test machine is just idle, sometimes you would need more tests to run in parallel to speed up development). The goal of this effort is to use SUSE Engineering Cloud to implement fire-and-forget fstests runs where you specify kernel to test (fetched from git tree or so), fstests configs to run, and then just pick up test results later on...

Bootstrap openSUSE for MIPS

While in the past MIPS boards were either low-end PIC32 or found in routers running OpenWRT at most, Imagination themselves have recently released the Creator CI20 board (Ingenic, MIPS32) running Debian. And the Shield Pro (previously iGuardian) kickstarter project (Octeon-III, MIPS64) promises to become a playground for testing KVM hardware virtualization. Porting openSUSE to MIPS will involve setting up an OBS instance linked to Factory (update: done) and cross-compiling a set of packages for an initial bootstrap (update: in progress). Maybe this can be scripted to some degree, as there will be some overlap with the ARM ILP32 port project.

Then we replay that record to create our own quilt-compatible source tree.

My Little Manager

a project by lucidd

Yes this project is yet another project for creating a Suse Manager clone. The motivation for that comes mainly from my need for a simple suse manager that i can easily run at home without the massive overhead involved in suse manager setup. Also since i mainly need to manage opensuse machines most of which are tumbleweed, suse managers repository model does not really work well in that case.

Use OpenStack Rally for SUSE Cloud testing

a project by evshmarnev

OpenStack is, undoubtedly, a really huge ecosystem of cooperative services. Rally is a benchmarking tool that answers the question: “How does OpenStack work at scale?”. To make this possible, Rally automates and unifies multi-node OpenStack deployment, cloud verification, benchmarking & profiling. Rally does it in a pluggable way, making it possible to check whether OpenStack is going to work well on, say, a 1k-servers installation under high load. Thus it can be used as a basic tool for an OpenStack CI/CD system that would continuously improve its SLA, performance, and stability. <img src="https://wiki.openstack.org/w/images/thumb/e/ee/Rally-Actions.png/850px-Rally-Actions.png" width="700">

Support for automatically building kernels with user-influenced configuration

an invention by vbabka

Sometimes a user might want to build her own kernel instead of using the provided binary, for various reasons. This means creating own .config and maintaining it through kernel version bumps, which often results in running "make oldconfig" and mostly holding down the enter button to accept upstream defaults. What I envision instead is a way to say where I want my own config to deviate from the distro default (as provided by e.g. kernel-stable on openSUSE), and only those options will override the distro default configuration. This distro default configuration is always updated for new upstream releases, so there should be no need to (manually or automatically) accept new upstream defaults, thus less risk of producing a broken kernel, as e.g. any new kernel options will be configured in the distro kernel so that they work with the distro itself (while upstream defaults might not be safe or desired).

Modernize Mash deployment

a project by seanmarlow

Mash is a Python based CI/CD pipeline for automated testing and publishing of public cloud images. Currently the production and development deployment for the package is inconsistent, slow and manual. This is a barrier to rapid development, deployment and testing. It also means the development workflow is different than production. This can lead to production issues which were not seen during development. In order to modernize the Mash workflow I plan to spend the week digging into a plethora of tools to first learn then build out a new workflow. The goal is to simplify deployment by choosing tools that provide consistency, modularity and repeatability. By leveraging the best tools available we can harden the code and accelerate the release cycle.

Shipping everything

a project by cschum

Writing code is wonderful, but it gets its real value, when it's released and shipped to the world. You know the mantra: "Release early, release often". Releasing code is not hard, but it involves a lot of details, and you want to get them right, because a release is this public statement "Hey, it's done, it works, you can use it." and you can't take a release back, once it's out there. To help with releases there are tons of release scripts which try to automate things. But they usually are quite fragile in case something goes wrong and a pain to test and maintain.

SMBIOS 3.0 support in dmidecode

an invention by jdelvare

On February 12th, 2015, the DMTF released version 3.0.0 of the System Management BIOS Reference Specification. This update isn't just adding enumerated values to existing structures, as previous updates did. It is also introducing a new entry point format which allows for larger tables and structures. Support for this needs to be added to dmidecode. Additionally, reading the entry point and the table from /dev/mem is no longer possible on all systems, so some work is in progress to offer an alternative interface through sysfs. It would be great to finalize this and release a new version of dmidecode that would support both SMBIOS version 3.0 and this new kernel interface.

perf-bench ipc

a project by dbueso

The state of the art of sysv/posix ipc benchmarking is a combination of ad-hoc programs scattered over the internet. While some mechanisms, such as sysv semaphores, have a lot of coverage, others really lack (message queues), and some are simply non-existent; albeit some of the legacy flavors we aren't too concerned with, other than them being functionally correct. Consolidate all this by taking the good benchmarks and implement new ones where needed, such as message queues, everything around the 'perf bench' framework. This will both improve the lives of us who hack on kenrel ipc as well as improve coverage overall. Eventually mmtests should be updated as well.

Protect disk devices from concurrent use in the libvirt libxl hypervisor driver

The libvirt qemu hypervisor driver has long supported protecting disk devices from concurrent use via libvirt's lock manager interface. Xen used to support the same functionality in the old xend toolstack, but dropped support in the new libxl toolstack. This project aims to provide integration between libvirt's lock manager and the libxl hypervisor driver, essentially reintroducing support for disk device protection in the Xen management stack.

It would be nice to take away the kernel component, so that it's easier to compile and use this package, since the current mhvtl kernel driver has not been merged upstream so has to be supplied as a KMP. Porting SHA1 codes to EFI stub environment

a project by joeyli

For Hibernate Signature Verification - HMAC version, I need a hash algorithm in EFI stub environment before ExitBootServices() to mix / mess random seed from different sources (rdtsc, rdrand...) for generating the HMAC key to sign the hibernate image in runtime environment. There have no any hash functions provides by EFI services, so need implement it in EFI stub. I choice SHA1 to be the target algorithm because currently I choice HMAC-SHA1 to be the algorithm to generate signature of hibernate image.

OMEMO is the next generation of end-to-end encryption method for IM applications, which supersedes OTR. Compare to OTR, OMEMO provides many useful new features. Currently, the support for libpurple is still in development. I found two projects - lurch and libpurple-omemo-plugin. They are in early phase so it is probably not very stable and few features are missing.

If you urgently need it feel free to grab it from the master branch. I'll give it another once-over before release, but it should be fine.

consolidate mm debugging tools and package them

a project by mhocko

Project Description

Different people use different ad-hoc tools to debug Linux kernel MM (memory management) related issues. I have couple of those myself. They fall into two main categories. One set for proper data collection and the other for some high level analysis. Our customers would benefit from the former and we (L3 labs from the later). Having them in a single package sounds quite reasonable to me.

a project by nmoudra

This is a project to create a "larp" game for SUSE employees (or anyone geeky enough to play this) which will be based on computer related knowledge. The core of the game is to search for other people and clues for solving the main goal by "connecting" or "hacking" according to given HW and SW roles. E.g. a person will play router, another one will play PC and they will need to find a person playing TCP/IP protocol to communicate and eventually create a working setup to solve the goal. They they need to work as a group and solve riddles/ciphers which will let them go further. There are more game mechanics i have in mind, but don't want to spoil all of them now :)

Learn and help learn

a project by kstreitova

I'm in SUSE for about a month and as a fresh graduate I had to learn a lot of stuff during this period. And there is a bunch of other things I will have to learn of course. Therefore I would like to use Hackweek to deepen my knowledge of various tools, processes, techniques or other packagers related stuff. However it would be quite a pity to hold the acquired information just to myself. So I would like to keep the result of my learning for further usage either by enhancing the Innerweb wiki, the public openSUSE wiki or by creating new wiki for packagers' purposes. Who can utilize this knowledge base? Newly employed packagers to learn important things quickly. Current packagers to share interesting techniques or hacks among them. Or just whoever else wants to quickly understand certain packagers' process or tool.

Write a simple ESMTP mail server in Haskell

a project by psimons

Hackweek 21?

Postmaster desperately needs a mail spool. I need to come up with a good way to store meta information about queued messages. An sqlite database seems like a natural fit because I might want to do some nontrivial queries in there to figure out which messages to deliver (and where). On the other hand, interfacing with sqlite is a bit unpleasant, so instead I might want to write one big JSON file that contains all relevant information. That would certainly suffice for the first version ...

Adding Linux kernel firmware signature support

a project by mcgrof

The Linux kernel already has cryptographic support for signature verification on data. This is used to digitally sign kernel modules at build time, and verify integrity and provenance at load time. Likewise the 802.11 subsystem on the Linux kernel had historically in parallel prior to Linux's own kernel signing facility implemented and integrated support to verify file integrity and provenance for use on the Linux regulatory database. The 802.11 subsystem's components that provide this facility are CRDA and wireless-regdb. CRDA and wireless-regdb technically are split up as two separate trees for development, wireless-regdb helps provide the 802.11 regulatory database while CRDA exists as a udev helper to feed to the Linux kernel a regulatory domain when needed. By using a regulatory database in userspace the Linux kernel is able to get updates for regulatory rules without requiring a rebuild. Linux distributions need the digitally signed regulatory.bin file from wireless-regdb tree and the CRDA binary from the CRDA tree. Linux distributions often combine both into one package, some distributions separate the two. The regulatory database is digitally signed by the wireless-regdb maintainer, and distributions that have have compiled in support for digital signature support on CRDA verify the integrity of the file before feeding a regulatory domain to the Linux kernel. Since the kernel module signing facility was merged upstream on Linux we could replace both CRDA and wireless-regdb distribution mechanism by adding cryptographic file signature verification support on Linux on the firmware_class module which provides the APIs to load firmware, and having the regulatory.bin file merged and updated through the linux-firmware tree. Adding cryptographic signature verification support on the firmware APIs on Linux is the first step to replace CRDA and wireless-regdb's own signature functionality. The second step is to extend the firmware APIs to enable subsystems to customize cryptographic requirements.
