There were several attempts to integrate ABRT to openSUSE. In this Hack Week I'd like to:

  1. review those attempts;
  2. build ABRT, libreport and their friends for openSUSE, and
  3. make sure that basic features such as segfault catching and plain text report generation work.

Resolution

  1. There are couple of attempts to port ABRT to openSUSE but all stalled years ago. Luckily, upstream is eager to work with openSUSE community to push their changes upstream. They even have a spec file with openSUSE-relevant provisions, see abrt.spec and libreport.spec. (Not tested by me nor by upstream but should be pushed to git master soon. Certainly a good basis for follow-up work.)

  2. My take on the openSUSE ABRT port can be seen at my OBS page. Clearly, it's a quick and dirty port (it's my second week at SUSE and I don't know openSUSE packaging guidelines well). But the resolution is that ABRT on openSUSE Tumbleweed is possible (Leap as well as 13.x, and SLES 12 should be doable too).

  3. More info about deploying it.

What's next?

An openSUSE developer who knows openSUSE packaging guidelines and is able to support the software in openSUSE should work with upstream.

ABRT might be especially relevant for L3 enterprise support with it's extensible plug-in design.

      There's abrt support in SUSE Manager. Getting this to run on (open)SUSE would be really cool!
